The Constitution has enabled us elect 47 Women Representatives into the National Assembly. Our representation as women in the just concluded general elections 2013 in other elective positions such as the President, Governor, Senator, Member of Parliament and County Representative are very dismal. We have secured only 16 Member of Parliament seats in the 290 seated National Assembly. We have further elected 8 female Deputy Governors out of 94 gubernatorial positions and 76 female County Ward Representatives out of 1450 wards. Through nominations, we have 3 nominated women Members to the National Assembly and 18 women nominated into the senate of whom, 1 is representing the youth whilst the other is representing persons with disabilities. Most recently, 6 women are nominees to the Cabinet, pending Parliamentary approval. We have 1 woman deputy speaker in the National Assembly, no woman speaker in the Senate and 2 women speakers in the County Assemblies out of 47 Counties. Our target was at least 1/3 of either gender in each of these elective positions. We as the women of Kenya commend its citizenry for maintaining peace, calmness and unity, prior to, during and after the 2013 general elections. |

The Caucus is currently re - launching its District Assemblies to County Assemblies to reflect the devolved government. Assemblies that have already experienced this change include; Mombassa County Women's Regional Assembly and the Makueni County Regional Assembly. Since the establishment of the pilot assembly, the Caucus had established 29 District Women's Regional Assemblies spread across all the 8 provinces in Kenya. The rationale behind this strategy is that effective and sustainable support for women’s participation in socio-economic development processes must engage and be led by members of that community. The Caucus plays a facilitative and technical supportive role, while the membership implements all program activities. |
