Hon. Dr. Phoebe Asiyo - Chairperson

Chairperson of the Kenya Women’s Political Caucus since 1997. Her main objectives have been to Identify, Sensitize and Train Women candidates for Political leadership, and secure Affirmative Action for women and marginalized groups. Prior to this, Dr. Asiyo was the parliamentary representative of Karachuonyo Constituency from 1979-1988, during which she focused on poverty eradication projects. Dr. Asiyo’s most outstanding motion in parliament was the Affirmative Action Motion (also called the Asiyo Motion, 1997), which catalyzed the birth of the Kenya Women’s Political Caucus. Was appointed CKRC commissioner in 2001. Other posts she is currently holding include: UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador for Africa, Member of the Board of Directors for the Centre for Development and Population Activities Washington D.C., USA, Member of the Board of Directors, of the African Think Tank on HIV/AIDS management – African Center for HIV/AIDS Management in Abuja Nigeria and member of Parliament for Global Action in New York – USA.

Served as a Government delegate to the UN General Assembly and the UN commission on the status of women and was also elected by the UN General Assembly to serve on the UN Sub commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of minorities. Has served as Consultant for the UN Economic commission for Africa, and the Inter Parliamentary Union in Rwanda, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Tanzania, and Bahrain. From 1994-1997 she was Chair of the National Council of Women of Kenya, Chair for the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization from 1962-1965, and from September 2005, was President's Advisor on Gender Issues - UN Millennium Development Goals meeting in New York.

Awarded the Order of the Golden Warrior 2004 by HE the President of the Republic of Kenya and an Honorary Doctorate Law Degree by the University of York – Toronto – Canada in 2002. A trained teacher by profession, further earned a diploma in Community Development from Mount Camel College in Israel and a second Diploma in Sociology from Wakefield College in Britain.
