International Women's Day 2010 |
The Women Can't Wait Campaign Launch 8th March 2010 Hon Phoebe Muga Asiyo OGW, was at the The Women Can’t Wait campaign launched on 8th March 2010, by Concern Worldwide at a VIP reception in the Cholmondely Room, House of Lords, London-United Kingdom. The reception was co-hosted by ActionAid, and the APPG on Agriculture and Food for Development. She alongside Baroness Nuala O’Loan DBE gave Keynote Addresses. This was a call to UN agencies and governments to act now and support women in the fight against hunger. Hon Asiyo was invited as the UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador for Africa. Her speech emphasised on the fact that although women produce up to 80% of the world’s food, they constitute the majority of the population that goes to bed hungry on a daily basis.
The campaign is concerned that over a billion people go to bed hungry despite the world leaders commitment to end poverty in 2015. Women who are farmers in agribusiness, suffer the most as they are the poorest and are tasked with the responsibility of providing food for their families. The aim of the campaign is to remind decision makers to prioritise women’s concerns in preparation for the UN world summit on the MDGs and the promises made in year 2000. | | | | Hon Phoebe Muga Asiyo (OGW) Kenya and NIGEL EVANS; MP, Member International Development Select Committee who commited himself to the campaign by signing the petition. |
